How to accept online payments in Lebanon

To accept online payments in Lebanon you pick the methods your buyers already use and that you can actually check tomorrow morning. That is usually some mix of cash on delivery, a local transfer tool such as Whish or OMT, a bank transfer, and sometimes a card. It is not “turn on every logo a foreign checkout template printed”. Methods you cannot reconcile will lose money in silence.

This page is a choosing guide, not a legal opinion and not a rate sheet. Rules, fees, and which companies operate for whom change. Confirm anything that sounds like a fee, a licence, or a bank policy with the provider you will actually use. What follows is how owners get hurt in practice, and how to pick a small set that matches the shop.

Start from how they already pay you

Open last week’s WhatsApp. Count: cash at the door, cash to the rakkess, Whish, OMT, a transfer screenshot, a card at the shop, “I’ll pay later”. That list is your real checkout. A website that ignores it will be bypassed by your best salesperson (often you) who will keep taking voice notes because the official page feels foreign.

If almost everyone still pays on delivery, the store must allow cash on delivery and must let you mark refused so stock comes back. Pretending COD is a bug is how you lecture customers and still eat the motorcycle. If a slice already prepays to skip the wait, give them one prepaid path, not four.

Cash on delivery is a process, not a checkbox

COD means you trust the address until the door. Some orders will come back. The system should have a status for that: out, delivered, refused. Stock should return. If Instagram still shows the item, you will sell it twice. The payment method and the inventory are the same problem wearing two hats.

Collect a phone that is actually a WhatsApp number, an area, a building, a note for the driver. That is more important than a fancy map pin. Many shops still assign a driver from a printed list in the morning. The job of the site is a clean order object, not a lecture about cashless cities.

You can ask for a small prepay on expensive or custom items if no-shows and fake orders hurt. That is a business rule, not a moral one. Write it the way you would in chat, in the language the buyer uses.

Local transfer tools and screenshots

Whish, OMT, and similar tools are how a lot of people send money without a card that works on a foreign checkout. Owners like them because they already use them for rent and family. The cost of that comfort is matching: a name, an amount, a time, an order number. If you do not give the buyer a reference to put in the note, you will hunt through an inbox at 1am.

A screenshot of a transfer can be enough at low volume. Decide who is allowed to mark paid. Decide what happens when the crop hides the amount. Decide the window: “send within two hours or we cancel”. Write it down. Informal is fine. Invisible is not.

Do not promise that a method is “instant” or “official” unless the provider you use says so in their own words. Your job is to collect in a way you can prove to yourself on Monday.

Cards

Cards are convenient for diaspora and for people who already pay that way at the shop. They are not universal here. A checkout that only takes a card will lose the buyer who was ready to send Whish. If you add cards, keep at least one local backup. Confirm with your bank or processor what they actually enable for your type of business. Do not copy a European shop’s footer and hope.

Deposits for clinics and salons are a different product from a store cart. A small hold to protect a chair is not an online supermarket. See booking if that is the real pain. Mixing a full catalog and a calendar because “payments” sounded like one project is how the quote becomes two projects.

USD, LBP, and the sentence you already use

You already have a sentence in chat: price in fresh, or LBP at today’s, or “as on the paper at the till”. The site should say that sentence. Silent conversion is how the landing turns into an argument. If you change the rule, change the page the same day you tell staff.

Do not build a live rate toy unless you are willing to honour it at the door. Most shops should not. Show one price, in the currency you can collect, plus a plain-language note if you also accept the other. That is enough for a first store.

Cuts, WhatsApp, and the morning list

Customers abroad must be able to pay or place a COD order while your shop is dark. That means the page is hosted off the premises. Staff packing at 9am need yesterday’s orders even if the net blips, a print view or an export beats a blank screen and a panic.

WhatsApp will still take orders. Either turn those chats into the same order list with two taps, or accept that you have two tills. Two tills is how you sell the last box twice. Payment method is part of that object: COD, Whish, card, later. “Paid” with no how is how cash goes missing in a family business.

How to choose this month

List the methods you can check without a new account. Add at most one new prepaid path if COD returns are expensive. Write the statuses: new, paid, packed, out, delivered, refused. Put the same rules on the website that you already shout across the shop. Then stop. More logos is not more professional. It is more places to lose a transfer.

If you need a catalog, checkout, and that order list, the build is an online store in Lebanon with a written list of methods, only the ones you can run next week. If you do not yet have a page people can find, start with a website and keep collecting in chat until the till is the bottleneck. Confirm fees and eligibility with whoever will process the money. I will not invent them here.

Questions owners ask

Do I have to offer cash on delivery?

If your buyers still say they will pay the driver, refusing COD because it feels old-fashioned is how carts die. You can still reward prepay with a small courtesy, not a lecture.

Is Whish or OMT enough without a card machine?

For many shops, yes, if you can check those inboxes every morning and match them to orders. A method you cannot reconcile is not a method. It is a rumour.

USD or LBP on the site?

Show the price the way you already quote in WhatsApp. Hidden conversion is how the argument starts at the door. If you switch, say so in the same sentence you use in chat.

Can I just take a screenshot of a transfer?

You can. Treat it as a process: who checks, how you mark paid, what happens when the screenshot is cropped. It does not scale forever. It is honest for low volume.

Should I enable every payment logo a template offers?

No. Each extra method is another place money can hide. Start with what you already collect in person or in chat. Add one prepaid option if COD returns are eating fuel.

Does this require an online store?

If you sell products or menus for delivery, a store with an order list is the usual home. If you only take a deposit for an appointment, that can live on booking, not a full catalog.
